چکیده

According to the American Bar Association (ABA), legal reasoning (also referred to as legal argument) is one of the ‘fundamental lawyering skills’; listed among those skills the ABA task force deems most important (Blasi, 1995). However, there is much debate over how best to teach legal argumentation. This study examines the effectiveness of using a computer-supported collaborative argumentation (CSCA) tool, QuestmapTM, to support the development of argumentation skills in second-year law students. 76 secondyear law students were divided into two groups: the treatment group received access to QuestmapTM to help construct arguments throughout the semester while the control group did not receive access. Results provide preliminary indication that CSCA may not support the development of argumentation skills in second-year law students. Using QuestmapTM, students would begin constructing an argument, see another counter-argument appear, and then begin discussing the counter-argument with its creator outside the software. Since not all of the argumentative dialogue is captured within the software, QuestmapTM then becomes a support for the process of argumentation, rather than a representation of it.

Designing Argumentation Tools for Collaborative Learning

The focus of education has shifted towards working actively, constructively and collaboratively, as this is believed to enhance learning. The studies discussed here deals with the influence of different CMC (Computer Mediated Communication) tools on argumentation processes during collaboration. The purpose of our research is to investigate the effect of computer supported environments and its t...

Facilitating learning in multidisciplinary groups with transactive CSCL scripts

Knowledge sharing and transfer are essential for learning in groups, especially when group members have different disciplinary expertise and collaborate online. ComputerSupported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) environments have been designed to facilitate transactive knowledge sharing and transfer in collaborative problem-solving settings. This study investigates how knowledge sharing and transf...

Facilitating argumentative knowledge construction with computer-supported collaboration scripts

Online discussions provide opportunities for learners to engage in argumentative debate, but learners rarely formulate well-grounded arguments or benefit individually from participating in online discussions. Learners often do not explicitly warrant their arguments and fail to construct counterarguments (incomplete formal argumentation structure), which is hypothesized to impede individual know...

Computer-supported collaborative learning in higher education: scripts for argumentative knowledge construction in distributed groups

Learners rarely know how to construct knowledge together in argumentation. This experimental study analyzes two computer-supported collaboration scripts, which should facilitate processes and outcomes of argumentative knowledge construction. One script aims to support the construction of single arguments and the other script aims to support the construction of argumentation sequences. Both scri...
